In the House That Jordan Built
Kelly Krumwiede on Basketball, Family, and Life Beyond the Court
Kelly Krumwiede can still vividly recall the rush of stepping onto the floor at the United Center, the iconic home of the Chicago Bulls. The lights blazed overhead, the jumbotron flashed, and in the stands sat her entire family, close enough to pick out their smiles among the sea of faces. Her Bradley University team was about to face off against the University of Illinois—a significant underdog in a matchup against a Big Ten powerhouse.
Yet, against every odd, they won.
“Being on the jumbotron, playing in the house Michael Jordan built, and winning that game with my family there—it was unreal.”
For Kelly, that moment wasn't just a career highlight—it was a reflection of a journey defined by family support, dedication, and an intense passion for basketball nurtured since childhood.
Basketball as Life: Kelly’s Athletic Journey
From a young age, Kelly stood out physically and competitively, gravitating toward sports like volleyball and basketball. Her competitive fire ignited early—playing in boys’ rec leagues and quickly discovering basketball as her true calling.
In high school, basketball became Kelly’s central focus. As the only freshman starter on her varsity team, she navigated expectations and competition from older teammates.
Sophomore year, she immersed herself fully in AAU basketball with Illinois Hustle, traveling widely to compete against elite players.
Junior year, she made the difficult choice to leave volleyball behind, fully committing herself to securing a collegiate basketball future.
By her senior year, Kelly shined, averaging 18 points and 11 rebounds per game, leading her team to one of their best seasons.
Yet beneath this success were countless sacrifices—missed family holidays, social events, and a traditional teenage life.
“Basketball was life—I missed holidays, family moments, but that was the nature of the game. There’s always a trade-off.”
Throughout these years, her mom stood as unwavering support—handling recruiting communications, driving her to tournaments, and even rebounding during practice sessions.
Navigating College: Balancing Passion and Pressure
Bradley University felt like home—a place where basketball mattered deeply, balanced with strong academics and family values. But college basketball revealed new challenges. Everyone was talented, the competition fierce, and the commitment relentless.
“You show up, and suddenly you’re not the best anymore. It’s humbling, competitive, and nonstop.”
Still, Kelly thrived. Despite the rigors—summer classes, intense training, film sessions, weightlifting—she excelled academically, graduating with a 3.83 GPA. The victory at the United Center was a culmination of years of hard work, an unforgettable validation of every sacrifice.
The Day After Sport: From Certainty to Uncertainty
When the final buzzer sounded on Kelly’s senior season, relief quickly turned to uncertainty. She realized how little preparation she had for life after basketball. Bradley provided excellent athletic support—but few tools for transitioning beyond sport.
“Basketball was my job—my tuition, my room and board—but no one told me what to do when that stopped. It was scary.”
Returning home, she navigated six awkward months, deeply missing basketball and unsure of her future direction.
What Helped Kelly Find Her Footing:
Reclaiming lost experiences: Kelly moved in with a former teammate, working at a gym and enjoying a year of freedom, social experiences, and simply being a young adult: “It was just .. fun”
Family support: Eventually, her stepfather visited and gently nudged her forward towards a stable career path: “He drove down one day, took me to lunch, and basically said, ‘What are you doing? It's time to move forward.’” It was exactly the push she needed.
Relearning health and fitness: Hiring personal trainers and nutritionists helped her transition from a basketball athlete’s diet to sustainable healthy habits.
Self-reflection: Embracing a new identity beyond basketball became vital.
Yet, Kelly believes structured support—career counseling or tailored mentorship programs—could have significantly eased her transition.
“There were no career paths laid out, especially for female athletes. We needed someone to show us options beyond sport.”
The Lessons That Stayed
Today, Kelly thrives professionally in hospitality, applying critical skills from basketball every day:
Time management: She constantly juggles priorities, leveraging discipline honed on the court.
Adaptability: Basketball taught her to quickly pivot and adjust when challenges arise.
Team-oriented mindset: She brings a collaborative approach, recognizing success relies on teamwork.
Kelly’s Advice to Her Younger Self—and Athletes Today
Looking back, Kelly wishes she'd said “yes” more—to friendships, family, and life outside basketball.
“It’s about balance: the sacrifices led to amazing opportunities, but there’s room for life outside the sport, too.”
Her story highlights the complexity of a high-performance athlete's life—a journey defined by passion, discipline, and inevitable trade-offs. Yet, Kelly wouldn't change her experience—it shaped who she is today.
Kelly’s journey underscores that peak performance extends beyond athletic success; it’s about creating an identity that thrives beyond the final game.
